Vancouver and Clark County have one of the highest rates of pedestrian deaths among Washington counties. The Clark Count DUI and Traffic Safety Task Force is working to address the pedestrian safety problem with assistance from the Washington Traffic Safety Commission.
- There have been 611 pedestrian deaths in the past eight years in Washington State
- Over 500 of the 611 pedestrian deaths occurred while the pedestrian was in a roadway
- Two-lane roads are dangerous -- 455 pf those pedestrians died on two-lane roads. Drivers are less likely to be watching for pedestrians where there are no sidewalks
- Two-thirds of all pedestrians were killed while walking at night
- Less than one-fourth of all pedestrian deaths occurred on wet roads
- Speed kills -- only seven deaths were caused by cars moving less than 25 miles per hour. At car speeds under 24 mph, the pedestrian has a 85-90 percent survival chance. The higher the speed, the greater the chance that a pedestrian will die.
