Recreation & Holidays: Halloween Safety Tips

Firefighters at the Vancouver Fire Department want you to have a safe and happy Halloween

Tips for Trick-or-Treaters
  • Go only to homes where the lights are on and you know the people.
  • Never trick-or-treat alone. Go with at least two friends.
  • Stay in familiar neighborhoods.
  • Use adult supervision for young children
  • Walk, don't run, from house to house to avoid tripping hazards.
  • Look in all directions before crossing the street.
  • Walk on sidewalks, not in the street.
  • Walk on the left side of the road, facing traffic, if there are no sidewalks.
  • Older children: wear a watch, know when you are due home and carry quarters to call home if necessary.
  • Don't cut across yards or driveways.
  • Carry a flashlight to help see and be seen.
  • Use reflective tape on candy bags to be better seen by motorists.
  • Don't wear masks when walking from house to house so you can see properly.
  • Don't pet animals you don't know.
Tips for Adults
  • Drive carefully and watch for excited youngsters darting into the street.
  • Avoid all unnecessary travel on Halloween evening. If you must drive, drive slowly and watch for small children.
  • Older children should know where to reach you and when to be home.
  • Remove anything that could be an obstacle from lawns, steps and porches when expecting trick-or-treaters.
  • Keep pumpkins with lit candles away from doorsteps where costumes can catch fire.
  • Keep indoor jack-o'-lanterns away from curtains or things that could catch fire.
  • Plan and discuss the route trick-or-treaters intend to follow.
  • Know the names of the children's friends.
  • Inspect candy before it is eaten. When in doubt, throw it out.
Costumes
  • Use reflective markings or tape on costume.
  • Wear light and bright costumes that are clearly visible to motorists.
  • Choose costumes made with flame retardant material when possible.
  • Avoid tripping; make sure costumes don't drag on the ground.
