Fire: Prevention Guidelines
Take steps to avoid fire in you home

  • Install and/or check smoke detectors - Test smoke alarms monthly and replace batteries annually; with Daylight Savings and Standard time changes, or perhaps on your birthday.

  • Don't overload electrical outlets - Avoid use of extension cords where they may be tripped over.

  • Don't leave candles unattended - Use candles in an open area away from combustibles. Don't leave children alone with lit candles. Keep matches and lighters out of the reach of children.

  • Turn off stovetop - Don't leave food cooking on the stove unattended.

  • Inspect fireplaces and wood stoves - Have your chimney and flue inspected annually by a professional and cleaned if necessary. Use a fire screen when burning fires. Don't burn paper, gift wrapping, or pine boughs. Don't hang holiday decorations from or on your fireplace when it is in use.

  • Keep fire extinguishers in your home - Get training for you and your family on how to use it.

  • Consider installing an automatic fire sprinkler system in your home. Statistics from the National Fire Protection Association show that use of automated fire sprinkler systems typically reduces the chance of dying in a fire as well as property loss by one-half to two-thirds.
